Landscape  Design
Process

What You Can Expect

Our design process is a collaboration between the client, the site and the designer to create a cohesive and enticing vision of your outdoor spaces and landscape. Our process is based on a progression that will engage YOU at every phase. This is achieved through effective communication, goal setting, sharing of ideas, and an atmosphere of openness and fun.

The typical phases of the design process include Visioning, Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documentation, Bidding, and Construction Observation.

Every project is unique, so the exact outcomes and deliverables at each phase will vary depending on client needs, project scope, and the distinctive attributes of the individual design and project.

We tailor the final deliverables for each phase and project based on client input and their desired level of documentation. Outlined below are a general description of the design phases, and deliverables that are typical at each stage.

Design Progression

Visioning
Develop the VISION of the project.
The client and designer meet to discuss the client’s goals and desires for their landscape. Site information and technical requirements are also collected at this time. This first phase establishes the design framework to help clarify decision-making and provides a shared vision that serves as a guiding compass for the process that follows.
Design Development
Now we REFINE the design.
During Design Development the conceptual design is refined and finalized through the study of dimensions, materials, planting palettes and detailing. The design and placement of program elements are adjusted to find their final locations. Coordination and collaboration with other design professionals usually begins during this phase to ensure complex conditions are studied and appropriate expertise is utilized. This phase results in a deliverable including more detailed plans, sketches and models.
Construction Bidding
+ Observation
Next we OVERSEE the execution of your design.
During this phase the designer has the opportunity to assist during the bidding process, contractor selection, and final negotiation.

As a landscape architecture firm we will support the homeowner during the construction phase to ensure clarity of vision and address questions as they arise. During construction we will periodically review all work performed and materials to ensure they meet the requirements set forth in the construction documents and specifications. We will review and certify payment requests from contractors once they successfully complete project milestones.

Our landscapes are designed for long term enjoyment and success. A long term maintenance guide can be put together to ensure that the landscape matures over time.
Schematic Design
The DESIGN effort begins.
The Schematic Design phase is about creating concepts and exploring ideas with the client to fit the program elements onto the site and planting schemes for the garden. This iterative exploration of ideas utilizes visual studies such as plan drawings, hand sketches, and 3D models to communicate ideas with the client and to receive feedback. This phase results in a deliverable including presentation graphics which show the site layout and incorporation of program elements.
Construction Documents
Here we DOCUMENT and DETAIL your complete design for construction.
Construction Documents consist of the finalized site plans, layout plans, planting plans, irrigation plans, construction details and specifications. These documents communicate what is to be built on the site with builders. Having a plan set allows for competitive bidding among contractors for equal and fair pricing.
